BRASILIA, April 10 (Reuters) - Brazil's sugar output will rise about 5 percent in the 2012/13 season that is now starting, the government forecast on Tuesday, as better weather and replacement of old cane plants have the crop on a recovery path after output dipped last season.
Sugar production should rise to 38.9 million tonnes, government crop supply agency Conab said in its first forecast of the season, up from 36.9 million tonnes in the prior season and also ahead of the 38.2 million tonnes produced in the season before that.

Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Sugar millers in Brazil, the world’s largest producer, will favor production of sugar over ethanol with prices at or above 21 cents a pound, Morgan Stanley said.
Producers in the South American country can make either sugar or ethanol from the raw material sugar cane. The raw sweetener traded in New York was up 1.2 percent to 24.13 cents a pound at 11:04 a.m. London time on ICE Futures U.S.
“Strong gasoline demand in Brazil has also led to an increase in anhydrous ethanol demand, though economics still support sugar production over ethanol down to a sugar price of 21 cents a pound,” Hussein Allidina, head of commodities research at the bank, wrote in a report dated yesterday.

The global sugar surplus is forecast to more than halve into next season, and prices look set to ease by the end of the year, according to a Reuters poll of 17 analysts issued on Monday.
The key questions for the global sugar trade in 2012 will be whether cane output in top producer Brazil recovers after a production setback, when and how much Brazilian cane will be converted into ethanol biofuel instead of sugar, and the outlook for exports from number two producer India.

Bunge Ltd. (BG), the world’s second- largest sugar trader, said it plans to spend $2.5 billion to boost sugar and ethanol production in Brazil over the next five years and may sell bonds to help finance the investments.
“We are very positive on the sugar and ethanol outlook,” Chief Executive Officer Alberto Weisser said at a press conference in Sao Paulo. “Our investments come at the right moment, as the world is yearning for food and clean energy.”
Bunge plans to invest the cash between next year and 2016 to boost capacity at eight mills in Brazil, the world’s largest sugar producer and exporter. The plan will boost sugar-cane crushing capacity to 30 million metric tons a year from 21 million tons, according to the White Plains, New York-based company. Sugar and ethanol capacity will grow by almost half.

The majority of plant matter we have available to produce biofuels comes in the form of cellulose, a long polymer of sugars. It’s easiest to convert this material to ethanol, but that creates its own problems: Ethanol is less energy dense than petroleum-based fuels, and most vehicles on the road can’t burn more than a 15 percent mix of ethanol and standard gasoline.
These disadvantages have led a number of labs to look into ways of using a cellulose feedstock to produce something more like standard fuels. In yesterday’s Nature, researchers proposed a clever way of doing this: take the biochemical pathway that normally burns fat and run it in reverse.

In California, Genencor announced a two-fold decrease in enzyme load for cellulosic conversion to fermentable sugars, with its new enzyme cocktail, Accellerase TRIO. The company said that its new TRIO package demonstrates that Genencor is continuing to deliver on innovation with its “easiest to use” package that combines all the required activities for cellulosic conversion.
Genencor’s Dr. Aaron Kelley said that “while Accellerase Duet made some big strides on the hemicellulsase front, TRIO is now driving C5 and C6 performance, while also showing great improvement with acid-based pretreated biomass.”
The sophistication of today’s enzyme cocktails is getting to be pretty staggering – TRIO has eight different families of activities, and would number in the hundreds if every activity in every family was counted. Kelley said that TRIO has already been employed by Inbicon and KL Energy at the demonstration scale for cellulosic ethanol, and is being tested by others the company is not ready to name at this time.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Local cane mills, world sugar markets and analysts were unmoved by the Brazilian government's threats to boost ethanol output by any means, saying ideas of a sugar export tax or credit limits would be hard to implement or ineffectual.
Brazilian ministers last week began floating early proposals for an industrial policy shift aimed at stimulating local ethanol supplies to bring down local fuel prices. Such measures, if successful, would likely redirect cane away from sugar production in a country that controls half of global trade in the sweetener.
But local cane mills doubt the effectiveness of such measures and question the political will to go to such an extreme in a country that relies on sugar shipments for billions of dollars in annual export revenue.
