Study eliminates factors in low amino acid digestibility in DDGS

Compared to corn, dried distillers grains with solubles has a low and variable digestibility of amino acids, nutrients which swine and poultry need. Although that has generally been pinned on syrup balls or heat used in the drying process, researchers from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and the University of Minnesota did a study of growing pigs that eliminated syrup balls as a suspect for low amino acid digestibility.

The results of the study were published in the Journal of Animal Science. In order to determine if amino acid digestibility issues were associated with the solubles or syrup balls formed in DDGS, five ingredients were evaluated, including DDGS, intact syrup balls, ground syrup balls, liquid condensed solubles and pulse-dried thin stillage, all produced at the same ethanol plant.

Researchers noted that batches of DDGS can contain variable amounts and sizes of syrup balls, said Juliana Soares-Almeida, who worked on this study as part of her master’s study in animal science at University of Illinois. “Our concern was that the presence of syrup balls could contribute to the low and variable amino acid digestibility in DDGS,” she told EPM.

Algae from ethanol plant shows promise as poultry feed

An algae strain grown by BioProcess Algae LLC at Green Plains Renewable Energy Inc.’s 65 MMgy ethanol plant in Shenandoah, Iowa, is one step closer to entering the poultry feed market. First-round feed trials recently conducted in conjunction with the University of Illinois, led by poultry science expert Carl Parsons, concluded that the algae feed has high energy and protein contents relative to comparable poultry feed products. The original goal of the trial was to determine the actual digestibility of the energy and protein from the algae compared to the soybean meal commonly used as poultry feed, said BioProcess Algae CEO Tim Burns. The trials showed that the algae not only tested well compared to soy meal, but also proved to have higher energy content than corn, distillers grains and 70 other common feed products, he said.

In addition to the high protein content, BioProcess Algae’s strain was also shown to be comparable to soy meal in amino acid profiles. Also, the high energy content of the algae could also be used as a more cost-effective source of Omega-3 fatty acids in poultry diets, he said. “We believe this may be one of the first times that carbon dioxide absorbed from an industrial source was used to grow and harvest algae that performed well in feed trials,” Burns said.

Approximately 160 million metric tons of poultry feed are used every year, according to Burns.

Byproducts of Biofuels Could be Economically Viable for Growers

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists have found environmentally and economically sound uses for the byproducts of biofuel production.

Animal scientist William Dozier, formerly with the ARS Poultry Research Unit in Mississippi State, Miss., has been working with colleagues at the ARS Swine Odor and Manure Management Research Unit in Ames, Iowa, and Iowa State University (ISU) to find ways to supplement animal diets with glycerin. Glycerin, a biofuel byproduct, contains energy-providing nutrients for animals.

Dozier and ISU colleague Kristjan Bregendahl evaluated the use of glycerin supplements in poultry feed. Dozier primarily dealt with broilers, which are chickens raised specifically for meat production, and gave glycerin-supplemented poultry feed to broilers that were 7 to 45 days old.

Demand for biofuels is due in large part to volatile fossil fuel prices. American businesses are embracing the shift toward renewable energy, and government mandates are making it more profitable for corn producers to sell the crop for ethanol production than for animal feed.

The Midwest Agribusiness Trade Research and Information Center (MATRIC) at Iowa State University has published a book on using distillers grains, a co-product of biofuels production, as a feedstuff for livestock and poultry. The book is only available online at http://www.matric.iastate.edu/DGbook and is free for downloading.

The book, Using Distillers Grains in the U.S. and International Livestock and Poultry Industries, was edited by Bruce A. Babcock, Dermot J. Hayes and John D. Lawrence, all professors of economics at Iowa State University. The editors invited internationally renowned experts in animal science, economics, trade, and transportation and logistics from Iowa State and six other universities to share their knowledge and the latest research about distillers grains.

New enzyme technology allows use of key biofuel by-product in poultry rations

Advances in enzyme technology now allow poultry producers to reduce feed costs by using a key by-product of the bio-fuel industry.

Speaking at the recent University of Nottingham Feed Conference, Alexandre Peron of Danisco Animal Nutrition described how the latest enzymes could allow poultry producer to replace a proportion of the cereal in poultry rations with the cheaper distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS).

DDGS is a by-product of the food and bio-ethanol industries and its lower price has led to its increased use in general animal feed. While DDGS is potentially a cost effective and valuable feed ingredient, there are certain anti-nutritional factors limiting its use in poultry rations.

Corn Prices Rise, Pitting Chickens Against Ethanol

Taking corn from the mouths of chickens to put into the gas tanks of U.S. cars and trucks is causing feathers to fly in Washington.

The $40 billion chicken industry, along with livestock producers, oil interests, grocers and some environmental and anti-hunger groups are hoping to put up a regulatory blockade to stop the diversion of corn stocks into the brewing of billions of gallons of ethanol for vehicles this year.

"It has never gone up this far, this fast," Richard L. Lobb, a spokesman for the National Chicken Council in Washington, said of the jump in corn prices to $6 a bushel and more, triple what they were two years ago. "We are competing directly with the people who make ethanol, and they are outbidding us for corn."
