Scientists cooperating with Starbucks report success in finding use for waste

In Pennsylvania, at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society scientists described development and successful laboratory testing of a new “biorefinery” intended to change food waste into a key ingredient for making plastics, laundry detergents and scores of other everyday products.

The report covered their work, launched in cooperation with the Starbucks restaurant chain – concerned with sustainability and seeking a use for spent coffee grounds and stale bakery goods. The biorefinery process involves blending the baked goods with a mixture of fungi that excrete enzymes to break down carbohydrates in the food into simple sugars.

Visalia, CA—Edeniq, a biomaterials and sustainable fuels company, hosted June 26 an event to officially launch their Corn to Cellulosic Migration (CCM) pilot biorefinery.

The biorefinery utilizes Edeniq's patented technologies including the Cellunator(TM), a mechanical pretreatment milling device that grinds plant materials into uniform particles, an advanced enzyme system that converts cellulose and hemicellulose to sugars, and proprietary yeasts to ferment the sugars to ethanol.

The CCM biorefinery is located at Edeniq's headquarters in Visalia, California.

Blue Marble, Anheuser-Busch sign MOU to develop pilot biorefinery

Seattle-based biorefining firm Blue Marble Biomaterials and Anheuser-Busch Companies LLC have signed a memorandum of understanding for Blue Marble to begin development of a pilot biorefinery to be co-located at a North American Anheuser-Busch brewery. A specific location of the Anheuser-Busch site wasn’t disclosed.

The project will initially focus on converting spent brewery grains and biogas derived from the brewing process into high-value biobased chemicals that can be readily used in the food, flavoring and fragrance industries using Blue Marble’s proprietary Acid, Gas and Ammonia Targeted Extraction (AGATE) process technology.

USDA offers to back ZeaChem's first commercial biorefinery

On Jan. 26, the USDA announced it has approved a $232.5 million conditional commitment to support the construction of ZeaChem Boardman Biorefinery LLC, a 25 MMgy integrated biorefinery to be built in Boardman, Ore., along the Columbia River. The announcement is the USDA’s second conditional commitment offer to a commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol project in less than a week. On Jan. 20, the USDA announced it had approved a conditional commitment for a $25 million loan guarantee to build Fiberight LLC’s 3.8 MMgy municipal solid waste-to-ethanol facility in Blairstown, Iowa.

In announcing the conditional commitment for ZeaChem’s project, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said the projects being offered loan guarantees from his agency will support the Obama administration’s goal of developing alternative energy sources to reduce the country’s fuel imports. “In his State of the Union address, President Obama outlined his vision for a new era for American energy—an economy fueled by homegrown and alternative energy sources that will be designed and produced by American workers,” Vilsack said in the news release. “This project and others like it will help to establish a domestic advanced biofuels industry that will create jobs here at home and open new markets in the Pacific Northwest and across America.”

Ethanol industry developments in 2011 have set the stage for a new era. The Renewable Fuels Association has identified five top stories for the ethanol world from 2011 that will change the future.

They are:

1. EPA approval of 15 percent ethanol for use in 2001 and newer vehicles
2. The end of the blenders tax credit and secondary tariff on ethanol imports
3. Surge in U.S. ethanol exports
4. New strides in advanced and cellulosic ethanol development
5. Emergence of the integrated biorefinery model

Switchgrass ethanol research looks to yield big benefits

Construction has begun in Hugoton, Kan., on the nation's first commercial scale biomass fuel refinery.

Abengoa Bioenergy's new, 23 million-gallon annual throughput refinery will take biomass, mainly switchgrass, and turn it into ethanol.

One problem in seeing more of these kinds of facilities sprout up across the U.S. is finding enough quality raw materiel to make what's been called the fuel of the future, cellulosic ethanol.

"All the switchgrass varieties you see right now in the field are basically for forage. We're now working on varieties specifically for ethanol production," said Ken Vogel, supervisory research geneticist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service Grain, Forage and Bioenergy Research Unit in Lincoln, Neb.

Rentech's Integrated Bio-Refinery Project Mechanically Complete

Cellulosic Fuels Production Expected by End of 2011

LOS ANGELES, Nov 08, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Rentech, Inc. /quotes/zigman/185313/quotes/nls/rtk RTK -4.38% announced today that all systems required to start up the Company's integrated bio-refinery (IBR) in Commerce City, Colorado are mechanically complete. Commissioning, validation and start-up of the renewable energy demonstration facility are underway. The project has reached this milestone within the original budget and schedule.

The IBR project was co-funded by a $23 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, to manufacture and install at the Rentech Energy Technology Center a 20 ton-per-day Rentech-ClearFuels biomass gasifier. The gasifier is designed to produce bio-synthesis gas from various high impact wood waste and sugar cane bagasse feedstocks. The gasifier has been integrated with Rentech's existing Product Demonstration Unit (PDU) at the site, which uses the Rentech Process and UOP's upgrading technologies to produce renewable drop-in synthetic jet and diesel fuels at demonstration scale. Rentech expects the integrated facility, which will have the flexibility to produce renewable syngas, hydrogen, and steam as well as biofuels, will be used to evaluate additional technology integration opportunities. Rentech funded the balance of the project's total cost of approximately $36 million, which includes the cost of building the gasifier, feedstock handling equipment, integration with Rentech's synthetic fuels plant, and operation of the facility for a period of 6 months to collect 2,000 hours of operating data. The project team responsible for meeting this important milestone for mechanical completion included URS Corporation, Linde Group/Hydro-Chem, Piper Electric Corporation and Ames Construction, Inc.
