N.H. grants full RPS credit to biomass thermal

New Hampshire has become the first state to grant the same credit to renewable thermal projects that renewable electricity projects receive under a renewable portfolio standard (RPS).

Established in 2007, the RPS requires electricity providers to provide 23.8 percent renewable electricity to customers by 2025, and grants renewable energy credits (RECs) on a four-category classification system. New Hampshire S.B. 218 adds thermal renewable to the RPS, granting RECs up to $29 per megawatt-hour of useable thermal energy produced by qualifying projects.

Ethanol driving up food prices, say supporters

CONCORD, N.H. - New Hampshire's House has voted to ban corn-based ethanol as a gasoline additive.

NH House OKs hemp farmingThe New Hampshire House is giving the nod to hemp farmers after passing a bill to protect industrial hemp from being tagged as an illicit drug.
The ban would not take effect unless at least two other New England states do the same. A similar proposal has not been approved in the rest of the region.

The House voted Wednesday to send the bill to the Senate after supporters successfully argued the use of ethanol has not benefited the environment as much as hoped. They also pointed out that use of corn to make ethanol has driven up food prices.

2 UNH faculty receive $1.4M in CAREER grants from NSF

Two University of New Hampshire assistant professors have received prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) grants. Vaughn Cooper of the department of molecular, cellular and biomedical sciences received $1 million to better understand beneficial mutations in bacteria by engaging high school students in data collection. Christopher White of the mechanical engineering department received $400,000 to research flow dynamics of liquefied biomass.

N.H. Legislator Considers Banning Ethanol

NASHUA, N.H. — David Campbell wants to ban corn-based ethanol from being blended into gasoline sold in the state of New Hampshire.

“It makes no sense environmentally when making a gallon of ethanol has a bigger carbon footprint than a gallon of gasoline, and it makes no sense to allow it to drive up food costs and availability when millions of people around the globe are facing starvation,” Campbell, a member of the state legislature, says.

He has had a bill drafted for consideration at the upcoming legislative session to prohibit sale of gasoline containing ethanol, and he’s already been hearing from people who promise support, as well as from state bureaucrats who tell it can’t be done.

Dartmouth researchers advance cellulosic ethanol production

Research finding exploits new technology to bring us closer to alternative fuel production

Hanover, NH – A team of researchers from Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering and Mascoma Corporation in Lebanon, N.H., have made a discovery that is important for producing large quantities of cellulosic ethanol, a leading candidate for a sustainable and secure alternative to petroleum-derived transportation fuel. For the first time, the group has genetically engineered a thermophilic bacterium, meaning it's able to grow at high temperatures, and this new microorganism makes ethanol as the only product of its fermentation.

The study was published online during the week of Sept. 8, 2008 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

"Our discovery is one potential avenue for research to facilitate turning inedible cellulosic biomass, including wood, grass, and various waste materials, into ethanol," says Lee Lynd, the Paul E. and Joan H. Queneau Distinguished Professor in Environmental Engineering Design at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. "In the near term, the thermophilic bacterium we have developed is advantageous, because costly cellulase enzymes typically used for ethanol production can be augmented with the less expensive, genetically engineered new organism."
