Washington, D.C. — There was a time when farmers used every bit of a corn plant:
• Grain would feed the hogs.
• Cobs could fuel the kitchen stoves.
• Stalks could feed cattle or provide bedding.
That time may come again.
Ethanol producers are increasingly using corn stover to power their plants, and they're working on using the stover itself to make the fuel.

Focusing on the identification of environmentally and economically sustainable methods of harvesting, storing and transporting corn stover, Illinois-based Archer Daniels Midland Co. and Missouri-based Monsanto Co., along with Illinois-based Deere & Co., are collaborating to explore technologies and processes that may turn crop residues into feed and bioenergy products. Stover can make up half of a corn crop’s yield, and can be used as animal feed, biomass for steam generation or electricity, or as a cellulosic ethanol feedstock. The USDA has forecasted a 2008 corn harvest of 12.3 billion bushels, potentially generating 290 million tons of corn stover.

ADM, Deere, Monsanto to collaborate on research to turn crop residue into bioenergy

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Archer Daniels Midland Co., Deere & Co. and Monsanto Co. said Tuesday they will conduct collaborative research on the best ways to turn the throwaway parts of corn plants into biofuel and other products.
The three agricultural industry companies will look for ways to harvest, store and transport the stalks, leaves and cobs of corn _ materials that are referred to as corn stover. They can be used as feed, to generate electricity and as feedstock to make biofuel.
