Biofuels and Conservation Achievable with Biomass

Getting energy from the land and practicing good conservation are not mutually exclusive. A federal ag deartment researcher says we can have both through using biomass.

USDA researcher Doug Karlen, who works at the Agricultural Research Service’s National Soil Tilth Lab in Ames, Iowa, told attendees of the recent USDA Outlook Forum that conservation and energy from biomass can be compatible if three things are considered.

“If we utilize multiple feedstock options, multiple conversion platforms and recognize that’s there’s no single solution.”

Reconciling Clean Energy and Conservation

With renewable energy poised for explosive growth, some conservation groups are racing to advance policy proposals and guidelines meant to prevent wind and bioenergy producers from despoiling sensitive habitats, especially in the prairie grasslands of the Midwest.

The Nature Conservancy, which this year sounded a warning about “energy sprawl,” is working with state energy officials and wind firms to build a database of maps that indicate wetlands and habitats within gusty regions. “We can tell the industry, these are places to avoid,” said the organization’s head of energy, Jimmie Powell.

EPA releases guide for states, communities on best clean energy practices

In Washington, the EPA today released a guide to help states, cities and organizations save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by adopting clean energy practices in their facilities, operations and vehicle fleets.

According to the EPA, a 2001 executive order in New York state saved $54.4 million in energy costs from energy efficiency improvements between fiscal years 2001-2002 and 2003-2004. EPA’s Clean Energy Lead by Example Guide identifies tested strategies proven to be cost effective.

Georgia State Government Ordered to Reduce Energy Consumption by 2020

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. – As a component of the Governor’s Conserve Georgia announcements today, Governor Perdue launched the Governor’s Energy Challenge. This is a commitment by Governor Perdue that Georgia’s state government will reduce its energy usage 15 percent by 2020 over the 2007 energy use levels through energy efficiency or in combination with renewable energy. Governor Perdue is challenging Georgia’s citizens, businesses, organizations, local governments and school systems to meet the state’s 15 percent reduction goal.
