Pacific Ethanol plants in NW and Calif. latest to declare bankruptcy
The ethanol industry is badly in need of a fill-up.

Some might say it's been running on fumes since last fall. Several ethanol plant closures and bankruptcies are evidence of the industry's troubles.

VeraSun Energy Corp., which once operated 17 ethanol plants in eight Midwestern states, sent shudders through the Corn Belt when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October.
